Biography
Joe Derrane, born on March 16, 1930 in Boston, Massachusetts, was an Irish-American button accordion player. He began playing the diatonic button accordion at age 10 and by 14 was performing at local house parties. In 1947-48, he recorded eight 78rpm singles of Irish dance tunes. Derrane transitioned to piano accordion and later electronic keyboards due to changing musical tastes. After retiring in 1990, his 1940s recordings were reissued on CD in 1993, sparking renewed interest. He resumed performing and released several albums, including Give Us Another (1995) and Return to Inis Mór (1996). Derrane notably received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2004. He passed away on July 22, 2016, in Brockton, Massachusetts.
