Claiborne Joseph Cheramie, known by the stage name Joe Clay, was an American rockabilly musician from Gretna, Louisiana. Born on September 9, 1938, in Harvey, Louisiana, Clay learned drums at the age of 12 and later learned to play rhythm guitar and electric bass. Clay began performing in a country band that secured a spot on the local radio station WWEZ. During the 1950s, the RCA subsidiary Vik Records signed Clay while still a teenager, leading to recording sessions in New York with backing musicians such as Mickey Baker and Skeeter Best. Clay appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956, performing a cover of the song âOnly You (And You Alone)â. After being dropped by RCA, Clay continued performing in the New Orleans area for more than 30 years. A rockabilly revival in Europe during the 1980s led to renewed interest, prompting Clay to tour England in 1986. Clay was featured in the 2008 documentary Rockabilly 514, performing the single âSixteen Chicksâ live. Clay was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2011 and died on September 26, 2016, at the age of 78.
