Biography

James Nelson, born April 7, 1928 in the United States of America, and known professionally as Jimmy "T99" Nelson, was an American jump blues and rhythm and blues shouter and songwriter from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Nelson performed in church before relocating to Oakland, California, where he met his mentor Big Joe Turner in 1941. Between 1951 and 1961, Nelson and the Peter Rabbit Trio released eight singles on the Modern/RPM label. His recording of “T-99 Blues” (1951) reached Number 1 on the Billboard R&B chart. He followed this with the hit “Meet Me With Your Black Dress On” in 1952. Nelson toured with bands led by Joe Liggins and Roy Milton and recorded for labels including Chess, Kent, and Music City. He worked in construction between 1955 and 1975 while continuing to write music. Nelson released the album Rockin' and Shoutin' the Blues in 1999, which received two W.C. Handy Award nominations. He recorded Take Your Pick (2000) and The Legend with guitarist Duke Robillard. Nelson died of cancer in Houston on July 29, 2007.
