James "Preacher" Ellis was an American blues musician born on August 17, 1934, in Foreman, Arkansas. He began his musical journey initially performing with the Travelling Four gospel group and forming Centuries before transitioning into a solo career. In the mid-1960s, Ellis released his first singles and albums, including recordings on labels such as Jewel, Space, Kris, and Romark. His early work spanned genres from blues and R&B to psychedelic funk and soul. He continued his career into the 1990s and 2000s, appearing on stage with Peter Tork in 1996 and releasing Red, Hot & Blues, which featured notable songs like "Sweet Dreams" and "Rainy Night in Georgia". Ellis notably performed frequently at the Dusk til Dawn Blues Festivals. He passed away in Dallas, Texas, on September 16, 2022.
