Jimmie Spheeris was an American singer-songwriter who was born in 1949. He was raised in a traveling carnival and achieved professional recognition in the late 1960s after moving to New York City and signing with Clive Davis. Spheeris is famous for a soulful, "smoky" vocal range and for utilizing open tunings on the guitar. His debut studio album, Isle of View (1971), featured the track "I Am the Mercury" and gained a devoted following. His discography includes the studio recordings The Original Tap Dancing Kid (1973), The Dragon is Dancing (1975), and Ports of the Heart (1976), the latter featuring backing vocals by Jackson Browne. Spheeris died in 1984 following a motorcycle accident. His final recording, Spheeris, was released posthumously in 2000.
