The Jezabels are an Australian indie rock group founded in Sydney in 2007, formed by Hayley Mary (lead vocals) and Heather Shannon (keyboards). The duo began as a folk duo in Byron Bay before forming the band with guitarist Sam Lockwood and drummer Nik Kaloper. Their first releases were the EPs The Man Is Dead (2009) andSheâs So Hard (2009), followed by Dark Storm (2010), which earned the Independent Music Awards titles Best Independent Artist and Best Independent Single/EP. The debut album Prisoner (2011) peaked at number 2 on the Australian Albums Chart, won an ARIA Award for Best Independent Album, and received the Australian Music Prize; it was also awarded Album of the Year by Australian Rolling Stone in 2012. Subsequent albums included Live At The Hordern Pavilion (2012), The Brink (2014) produced by Dan GrechâMarguerat and mastered at Abbey Road Studios, and Synthia (2016). The band toured internationally, performing at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, and the Montreux Jazz Festival, and contributed tracks such as "The End" (2013) and "Look of Love" (2014) to various soundtracks. Their releases continued with EPs The Piss, the Perfume (2020) and The Drip (2021), and solo projects like Hayley Maryâs Roman XS (2024) and Heather Shannonâs Midnight Sun (2021).
