Biography
Jesca Hoop is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who has gained a substantial following due to the wide range of her musical styles that music critic Alexis Petridis called "compellingly unique and hard to pigeonhole". Born in California (21 April 1975), to Mormon parents, she sang hymns and folksongs as a child, broke from the church as a teenager and after a time living in rural Wyoming and Arizona moved to Los Angeles. There, she worked as a babysitter for the children of singer Tom Waits and his wife Elizabeth Brennan who mentored her as she became a professional entertainer. She played at local venues and in 2007 released her first album Kismet featuring former Police drummer Stewart Copeland. It went to number 17 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums Chart and number 43 on the Independent Albums Chart. She moved to Manchester, England in 2008 and released her second album, Hunting My Dress in 2010, which included a track with Elbow singer Guy Garvey. It reached number 31 on the Heatseekers Chart and was followed by The House That Jack Built in 2012, The Complete Kismet Acoustic in 2013 and Undress in 2014, which contained acoustic versions of songs from Hunting My Dress. Over her career she has performed on tour with Peter Gabriel and opened in concert for Mark Knopfler, Elbow, Andrew Bird and others. She collaborated with Sam Beam on the 2016 album Love Letter for Fire, which reached number 14 on Bilboard's Alternative Albums Chart. In 2017 her album Memories Are Now hit number 17 on the Heatseekers Chart and she toured the US and the UK in support of the release. Jesca Hoop followed with Stonechild (2019), The Deconstruction of Jack's House (2021), Order of Romance (2022), Selective Memory (2025), and Long Wave Home (2026).
