Biography

Joseph Gaetan Mengozzi, known professionally as Jerry Mengo, was born in 1911 in Nice, France. He began his career as a jazz musician and bandleader, gaining recognition for his work with musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Benny Carter during the 1930s. Mengo's early recordings included collaborations with Django Reinhardt and Alix Combelle. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Mengo released numerous albums including Club De Danse (1954) and Suprise Party ...Sans Laisser D'Adresse (1960). He was known for his contributions to film music and his hit song "Twistin' The Twist" (1961), which had over 34 European adaptations. Mengo's orchestra animated dance events, including the Nuit de la Chancellerie under presidents René Coty and Charles de Gaulle in 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960, and 1961. He passed away in 1979 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France.
