Born in Los Angeles, California on August 31, 1969, musician Jeff Russo first came to prominence as a member of alternative rock band Tonic before pursuing an award-winning career as a composer for film, TV, and interactive media. Jeff Russo co-founded Tonic in 1993 with Emerson Hart. After signing with Polydor Records in 1995, the group released their debut album, Lemon Parade, the following year. The album included three Top 10 mainstream rock singles, including the chartâtopping hit âIf You Could Only See.â After two more acclaimed albums â Sugar (1999) and Head on Straight (2002) â the band split in 2004 and Jeff Russo pursued other musical interests. He first got into soundtrack work by composing the score for the 2004 film Ghost Game. In 2006, at the encouragement of his friends Wendy & Lisa, he began assisting in studio sessions for film and television projects. The experience revealed a deep affinity for scoringâan approach that fused his intuition as a guitarist with an emerging talent for thematic storytelling. He then rejoined his Tonic mates for a reunion in 2008 and has continued to work with the band, although his career as a composer took precedence over his alt- rock career. Jeff Russo rocketed into prominence through his collaborations with writerâdirector Noah Hawley, particularly on the FX series Fargo, beginning in 2014. His atmospheric scoring for the series earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition in 2017. Jeff Rusoâs success soon made him a central figure in scienceâfiction and prestige television. He became a key musical architect within the expanding Star Trek universe, composing for Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He also scored projects such as Counterpart (2017-2019), Snowfall (2017-2023), Brand New Cherry Flavor (2021), and Ripley (2024). In the world of interactive storytelling, he earned a BAFTA nomination for his evocative score for the acclaimed 2017 video game What Remains of Edith Finch. Continuing with his work for the Star Trek franchise, Jeff Russo composed the score to the 2026 series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
