Biography
Jeff Gauthier, born on March 4, 1954 in Santa Monica, California, is an American violinist known for his work across classical, jazz, new music, and free improvisation genres. He began studying violin with his aunt Helen Pitzele and later with Armand Roth of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Gauthier's performing career began in the late 1970s within the Southern California avant-garde scene. He was a founding member of Quartet Music, an acoustic ensemble active from 1979 to 1991, which recorded four albums and received two NEA grants. As an improvising violinist, Gauthier collaborated with notable artists such as Yusef Lateef & Adam Rudolph on the album The World at Peace, the Alex Cline Ensemble, and Nels Cline's Lovers project. His own ensemble, Jeff Gauthier Goatette, released several CDs including Mask (2002) and Open Source (2011).
