Biography
Gloria Jeanne Black, born on October 25, 1937 in Pomona, California, is an American singer whose early exposure to television set the stage for her career. Black first gained national attention with a performance on Cliffie Stoneâs Hometown Jamboree, followed by engagements in Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas that led to a collaboration with guitarist Billy Strange. In 1960, she signed with Capitol Records and released the single "Heâll Have to Stay", a response to Jim Reevesâ hit; the track reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, stayed on the chart for eleven weeks, and earned a gold disc for selling one million copies. Subsequent releases include "Lisa"/"Journey Of Love" (1960), a duet with Janie Black, and "Oh, How I Miss You Tonight" (1960), a response to Elvis Presleyâs Are You Lonesome Tonight?. Capitol issued the LP A Little Bit Lonely in 1960, the only fullâlength album of her career. Gloria Jeanne Black passed away on 23 October 2014 in Orem, Utah.
