Biography

Jean Redpath was a Scottish folk singer born on April 28, 1937, in Edinburgh. Raised in Leven, Fife, she learned traditional Scots songs from her mother and studied medieval studies at the University of Edinburgh. In March 1961, Jean Redpath moved to the United States and began performing in San Francisco before meeting Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Bob Dylan in Greenwich Village. Her album, Skipping Barefoot Through the Heather, was released in 1962. She signed with Elektra Records in 1963 following a concert performance at Gerde's Folk City. Jean Redpath appeared regularly on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion from 1974 to 1987 and toured extensively internationally. She died on August 21, 2014, at a hospice in Tucson, Arizona.
