Biography

Formed in London in 1986, the Jazz Warriors is an English jazz group. The band came together when London organization the Abibi Jazz Arts commissioned a group that would showcase talented young black musician. The Jazz Warriors, which grew to include more than 25 members, became a launching pad for artists like Courtney Pine, Gary Crosby, Steve Williamson, Phillip Bent and many others. They released their debut album, Out of Many, One People, in 1987. While the band’s mission was successful, they eventually fell apart by 1994 once the members began exploring solo careers. A few of the members joined forces again in 2007 as Courtney Pines’ Afropean Jazz Warriors, but that project was only a temporary side project. Four years later, the Jazz Warriors International Organization was formed to honor and embrace the legacy of the original Jazz Warriors. In 2020, some of the members of the original group reformed the Jazz Warriors.
