Biography

Jawoll were a German new wave band formed in Kassel, Germany, in 1981 by Kornelia Scholz and Matthias Kutschke at the Kassel University of Arts. The group first thought about writing songs in English but eventually chose to sing in German, inspired by bands like Ideal and Anette Humpe. Jawoll signed with Rüssl Räckords, the label of comedian, musician, and painter Otto Waalkes, following a notable appearance on the popular music show Bananas. Their debut single "Taxi" was released in March 1982 and reached number 20 in Germany. The band's self-titled album, released in August 1982, peaked at number 14 on the German charts. Follow-up singles included "Rendezvous" (June 1983) and "Ich bin verrückt nach Dir" (1984). The band disbanded in 1986. After the split, guitarist Robert Foster moved to Canada and joined Jann Arden's band, achieving international success. Kornelia Scholz passed away in Regensburg in 1991, at the age of 38, from leukaemia.
