Biography
Janice Kapp Perry (born October 1, 1938) is an American contemporary gospel composer, songwriter, and author from Ogden, Utah. Raised in Vale, Oregon, Perry studied music theory at Brigham Young University (BYU). At age 38, following a sports injury, she began composing for her local church. She released her debut album, Where is Heaven, in 1978. Perry wrote nearly 3,000 songs, including âI Love to See the Templeâ and âA Child's Prayerâ, which appeared in the official LDS Church hymnal and Children's Songbook. She collaborated with Orrin Hatch on six albums; their song âHeal Our Landâ was performed at the 2005 presidential inauguration. Perryâs work was performed by Brooks & Dunn, Gladys Knight, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, in which she sang from 1993 to 1999. In 2020, BYU awarded Perry an honorary doctorate in Christian service in music.
