Biography
Born in Djursholm, Sweden on October 16, 1952, Jakob Lindberg is a Swedish lutenist. His is best-known for the first ever recording of the Complete Solo Lute Music of John Dowland and other previously unrecorded music. He directs operas that utilize instruments from the lute and guitar families. As a player, he has performed solo and in small and large ensembles. He began his musical journey by studying the guitar at a young age after being inspired by The Beatles. By the time he was 14, he was studying under Jörgen Rörby, who introduced him to the lute. After studying music at Stockholm University and the Royal College of Music in London, England, he focused on performing Renaissance and baroque music, making his solo recital debut in 1978 at Wigmore Hall in London. He became a professor of the lute at the Royal College of Music and began teaching in 1979. In 1985, he founded the Dowland Consort, specializing in performing music from Elizabethan and Jacobean times. Outside of his own projects, he has also performed with many other period instrument ensembles. Jakob Lindberg has toured internationally as a soloist, accompanist, and ensemble/consort player. Jakob Lindberg began his recording career in the early 1980s, recording over three dozen albums in nearly 40 years including John Dowland: Complete Lute Music (1980), Faire, Sweet & Cruell (1984), Songs for the Guitar (1986), Bach: Lute Music (1994), Italian Virtuosi of the Chitarrone (2012), and Note Dâoro (2020).
