Biography
Author, composer, musician and performer, Larezeki Belkacem, better known as Areski, was born in Versailles on January 23, 1940. He began performing on stage before meeting Jacques Higelin during his military service. This friendship led to the 1969 album Higelin & Areski, released on the Saravah label, and the meeting of Brigitte Fontaine, who became his companion and invited him to appear on her avant-garde album Comme à la Radio, produced in 1970 with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. After a joint show, Niok, at the Théâtre du Lucernaire, Areski went solo, recording Un Beau Matin (1972) and appearing in Pierre Barouh's film Ãa va, ça vient. In addition to composing music for plays by director Peter Brook, Areski's collaboration with Brigitte Fontaine evolved into a recurring duet on the albums Je Ne Connais Pas Cet Homme (1973), L'Incendie (1974), Le Bonheur (1975), Vous Et Nous (1977) and Les Ãglantines Are Peut-Ãtre Formidables (1980), on which the musician demonstrated his creativity and eclecticism. While he continued to work with the singer, as evidenced by their show Acte 2 and the albums that followed, Areski composed in the shadows and occasionally sang. He wrote film music for Romain Goupil and studied at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, before returning to song under his own name in 2010 with the album Le Triomphe de l'Amour, on which he is accompanied by Vincent Segal, Didier Malherbe, Jean-Philippe Rykiel and Marcel Loeffler. Areski Belkacem is also the creator of "concerts de dessins", shows that combine live music and comic strips. In 2025, he continued his solo career with the album Long Courrier, his third in over fifty years, followed a few months later by Les Mômes Porteurs. After more than half a century of a discreet musical career, Areski Belkacem died on June 1, 2026, at the age of 86.
