Biography

I Santo California, an Italian pop group originating from Campania, Southern Italy, formed in 1974. Initially known as La Nuova Frontiera, the group began performing in local clubs and beach resorts along the Amalfi Coast. Their breakthrough came when they piqued the interest of Elio Palumbo during a concert in the town of Nocera Inferiore, resulting in a contract with Yep Record in Rome and a name change to I Santo California. The band released their debut single "Tornerò" at the end of 1974, which became an international hit, reaching number one in Italy and Switzerland in 1975. The love ballad also peaked at number five in Germany and Austria, and was the best-selling single of the year in Switzerland. Their debut album Torneró broke into the top 20 in Italy. Subsequent singles like "Un angelo" and "Dolce amore mio" continued their success, with the latter reaching number six in Italy and number three in Switzerland. In 1977, I Santo California participated in the Sanremo Music Festival with "Monica", finishing third and achieving international hit status. Their last top ten hit in Italy was "Manuela, amore!" in 1978. Despite a decline in popularity, the band continued to record and perform, releasing albums like Per un mondo migliore in 1994 after a fourteen-year hiatus.
