Howard Tate, on August 13, 1939 in Elberton, Georgia, is an American soul singer and songwriter. In his teens, he joined a gospel music group that included Garnet Mimms, recording rhythm and blues songs for Mercury Records and Cameo Records in the early 1960s. Tate's breakthrough came when he collaborated with producer Jerry Ragovoy, resulting in a series of soul blues recordings from 1966 to 1968. Notable singles from this period include "Ain't Nobody Home", "Look at Granny Run Run", and "Stop", all of which charted in the Top 20 of the Billboard R&B chart. His song "Get It While You Can" gained further prominence when recorded by Janis Joplin on her album Pearl. Tate's career saw several notable albums, including Howard Tate (1972) and Rediscovered (2003), which featured covers of songs by Elvis Costello and Prince. After a period away from the music industry in the late 1970s, Tate made a comeback in 2001, performing at various festivals and recording new material. His later albums include A Portrait of Howard (2006) and Blue Day (2008). Tate died on December 2, 2011, due to complications from multiple myeloma and leukaemia.
