Biography

Howard Goodman, born November 7, 1921 in Dora, Alabama, was an American gospel singer. He started his career in the 1940s performing Southern gospel with his sisters Gussie Mae and Stella. In 1949, he founded The Happy Goodman Family, which included various combinations of his eight siblings and his wife Vestal Goodman (née Freeman). The group gained attention in the early 1960s and continued performing until the late 1970s. Following the success of Bill Gaither’s Homecoming video series and the deaths of Rusty and Sam Goodman, former band member Johnny Minick joined Howard and Vestal, reviving The Happy Goodman Family. The group continued until Howard's death on November 30, 2002 in Nashville, Tennessee. During his career, Goodman won two Grammy Awards as a member of The Happy Goodman Family: Best Gospel Performance in 1969 and Best Gospel Performance, Traditional in 1979.
