Biography

Houston Person is a highly regarded American jazz saxophonist who has collaborated with a great many top artists since his recording debut, 'Underground Soul', in 1966. Born in South Carolina, he studied music as a child and played in a band while serving with the United States Air Force. He appears on more than 75 albums including dozens as leader such as 'Soul Dance!' (1968); 'Houston Express' (1970); 'Pure Pleasure' (1976); 'Suspicions' (1980); 'Always On My Mind' (1985); 'Basics' (1989); 'Horn to Horn' (1994) with Teddy Edwards; 'My Romance' (1998); 'Blue Velvet' (2001); 'All Soul' (2005); 'Moment to Moment' (2010); 'Something Personal' (2015); 'Rain Or Shine' (2017); 'Remember Love' (2018) with Ron Carter and 'I'm Just a Lucky So and So' (2019). His most frequent collaboration has been with vocalist Etta Jones with albums ranging from 'Etta Jones '75' (1975) to 'Save Your Love for Me' (1980); 'Fine and Mellow' (1986); 'Christmas with Etta Jones' (1990); 'The Melody Lingers On' (1997) and 'Etta Jones Sings Lady Day' (2001). The single 'Disco Sax/for the Love of You' (1976) went to number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100. His schedule was to include appearances in 2020 at the Lied Center of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.
