Younger sister of singer Alton Ellis (1938-2008), Hortense Ellis was born on 18â¯Aprilâ¯1941 in Kingston, Jamaica, and became a vocalist. At eighteen she won a spot on Vere Johns Opportunity Hour, where her rendition of "I'm Not Saying No at All" attracted attention and earned her Jamaicaâs Best Female Vocalist award in 1964. Ellis released her debut album Feel So Good in 1975 and her second album Still in Love in 1977, achieving chart success with singles "Willow Tree" and "Unexpected Places" that year. She worked with producers Ken Lack, Coxone Dodd, and Lee âScratchâ Perry, toured Jamaica and Canada, and recorded under the pseudonyms Mahalia Saunders and Queen Tiney. After a brief period in the United States, she returned to Jamaica in 1989; she died on 19â¯Octoberâ¯2000 after battling throat cancer.
