Hod OâBrien was an American jazz pianist who was born as Walter Howard OâBrien in Chicago, Illinois, in 1936. He achieved early professional recognition in 1955 while substituting for the pianist Randy Weston and is famous for his contributions to the modern jazz scene and his collaborations with major jazz figures. OâBrien led his own ensemble in Lenox, Massachusetts, between 1956 and 1957 before joining the bassist Oscar Pettiford. Between 1960 and 1963, he performed alongside musicians including Phil Woods, Freddie Hubbard, and Lee Konitz. In 1974, he established the St. James Infirmary jazz club in New York City, where he performed in the house band accompanying artists such as Chet Baker and Roswell Rudd. His discography includes performing on the recording Three Trumpets (1957) and the solo studio recordings Opalessence (1985), Ridinâ High (1990), and So Thatâs How It Is (1998). OâBrien died in 2016.
