Biography

The New York City-based trio of Junior Mack, the late Bill Sims Jr., and Sims' daughter Chaney Sims began cooking up jazz-flavored bluesy delights with gospel flourishes in 2008. The clue’s in the name; HBO’s USP is its orchestra, a horn section comprising a crackerjack Franco-American team who infuse traditional blues with the jazzy spirit of New Orleans. Among these players are Vincent Bucher (harmonica), Grammy-awarding winning blues drummer Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith, and a horn section of Bruno Wilhelm (tenor saxophone), Kenny Rampton (trumpet), Steve Wiseman (trumpet), and Clark Gayton (trombone, tuba, and sousaphone). Celebrating African-American musical traditions, 2012 marked the release of debut and the group’s only album to date, And Still I Rise, which was nominated for Best Blues Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards and co-produced by the municipality of Aulnay-sous-Bois (Seine-Saint-Denis). Bill Sims passed away on February 2, 2019.
