Franz Konwitschny, born on August 14, 1901, in Fulnek, Moravia, was a German conductor and violist. He studied at the Academy of the Music Association in Brno and later at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig. He began his career playing viola in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra before transitioning to conducting and joining the Stuttgart Opera in 1927. During World War II, he served as chief conductor in Frankfurt and Ludwigshafen. Post-war, he was musical director in Hanover from 1946 to 1949, then principal conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra until his death. He also led the Dresden Staatskapelle and Berlin State Opera. Konwitschny recorded a complete cycle of Beethoven symphonies. He died suddenly on July 28, 1962, during a rehearsal in Yugoslavia, and received a full state funeral by the GDR.
