Biography

Hasan Mutlucan, born on March 1, 1926, in İzmir, Turkey, was a Turkish folk music singer. After his father's death when he was six years old, Mutlucan began working as an assistant decorator in a theatre group in Istanbul. He soon took small acting roles but preferred a career in music. In the late 1940s, he attended the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory and, with his exceptionally high-quality bass voice, was offered a position in the opera. However, Mutlucan chose to focus on folk songs, particularly those with epic lyrics. He began singing epic-style songs for Turkish Radio and Television Corporation after 1973. Following the 1980 Turkish coup d'état, his songs were frequently played, earning him the nickname "singer of the coup," a label he denied. Notable albums include Yalan Dünya Senden Bezdim (1975) and Anadolu'dan Türküler (2006). Mutlucan died on December 28, 2011, in Istanbul.
