Biography

A well-respected musical figure, Chinese singer and songwriter Han Hong (Tibetan name Yangjain Zhoima) – who is of mixed Tibetan and Han Chinese ethnicity – is celebrated both for her singing and her songwriting. Born on September 26, 1971 in Chamdo, China, Hong joined the children's choir in 1980 and received formal training, before moving to Beijing. She began composing for other artists in 1993 and penned a number of hit songs, launching her own career in 1998 with the release of The Brightness of the Snow (雪域光芒). Another two albums followed, 2000's Daybreak a.k.a. Dawn (天亮了) and 2001's We're All Awake (醒了), but Hong – who is famed for championing traditional Tibetan culture while also bringing in modern Chinese touchstones – began gaining notoriety in 2002 following the release of Singing (歌唱). 2008 was a career-defining year for Hong, who performed in a Chinese television gala broadcast after the Olympic closing ceremony and at the 2008 Summer Paralympics opening ceremony. She released Listen to my Voice (听我的声音) in 2009 and Red Song (红歌) in 2011, and in 2014 made history as the first female winner on Hunan TV's singing competition I Am a Singer. Hong has continued to put out singles, including four in 2018. Since 2000, she has been praised for her philanthropy, engaging in a number of causes over the years and establishing her own charity organization, Han Hong Love and Charity Fund, in 2012.
