Biography

Gwerz, a French Breton musical group, was formed in 1981 in Centre-Bretagne. The quintet, consisting of Patrick and Jacky Molard, Erik Marchand, Youenn le Bihan, and Soïg Sibéril, aimed to interpret traditional gwerzioù (storytelling songs) with a blend of traditional accompaniment and original compositions. Their debut album, Gwerz, released in 1986 under Dastum, marked a significant breakthrough, earning the Triskell d'or award for promoting Breton music. The following year, they released Au-delà and won the Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles-Cros. In 1993, Gwerz released their live album, Live, which featured reimagined versions of their earlier works. The group also performed at various festivals, including the World Music Festival in Ris-Orangis in 1997 and a Celtic festival in Dunkirk in 2001.
