Biography
First a pioneer of Latin American rock in the 1960s with Arco Iris, Argentine Gustavo Santaolalla (born August 19, 1951 in the suburbs of Buenos Aires) went on to guide artists such as Café Tacvba and Juanes. After several solo albums, including the acclaimed Ronroco in 1998, Gustavo Santaolalla specialized in instrumentals for film scores. He was involved in such landmark films as Amours Chiennes (2000) and 21 Grammes (2003). He won the Oscar for Best Film Score twice, for Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Babel(2006). In 2012, Gustavo Santaolalla is at the musical helm of the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road. A protean artist, since 2001 he has also been a member of the electronic tango group Bajofondo, a regular at international festivals. A producer for other artists, he has collaborated with Café Tacvba since 1992, winning a Latin Grammy Award with the group for the album Cuatro Caminos in 2004. The following decade found him still active, with the solo album Camino (2014) and the soundtrack to the TV series Narcos: Mexico (2018). Winner of a Latin Grammy Trustees Award in 2023, Santaolalla composed the music for the video game The Last of Us and its TV adaptation, among other soundtracks for The House (2022) and Wild Life (2023).
