Robert Lewis Jones, known as Guitar Gabriel and Nyles Jones, was born on October 12, 1925, in Decatur, Georgia. He began playing guitar at a young age, influenced by his family's musical background. In the 1940s, he started traveling the country playing guitar in medicine shows, collaborating with notable artists such as Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters. Jones recorded "The Welfare Blues" in 1970 under the name Nyles Jones, which became a hit in Pittsburgh and Cleveland. His album My South, My Blues was released the same year, but he did not receive royalties for it. In 1994, Tim Duffy and his wife Denise founded the Music Maker Relief Foundation, which supported Guitar Gabriel's performances at venues like the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Robert Lewis Jones died on April 2, 1996, and is buried with his guitar in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
