Biography

Guillermo Marchena, born on January 19, 1947, in Willemstad, Curaçao, is a Dutch singer and drummer. He began his musical journey playing drums in various rock bands in his homeland before moving to Amsterdam in 1970, where he performed with local bands in city clubs. In 1974, Marchena relocated to Munich and joined Klaus Doldinger's band Passport. Four years later, he co-founded Sigi Schwab's Percussion Academia with Freddie Santiago, a world music ensemble that toured extensively for 15 years. During this period, the trio collaborated with Brazilian trumpeter Marcio Montarroyos and New York bassist Mark Egan to produce two television shows for the Jazz-In series. In 1987, Marchena recorded "My Love Is a Tango" for Sigi Schwab's soundtrack to the ZDF Christmas series Anna. The song reached Number 1 on the German singles chart in January 1988 and sold approximately 600,000 copies. Despite this success, his follow-up single "Time for Lovers" only reached number 46 on the German Airplay Charts in April 1988. Marchena continued to work with Schwab until his death. He passed away on March 1, 1994, in Curaçao due to complications from AIDS, just before his 48th birthday. His final recordings were released posthumously in 1995 under the title Mandala by Sigi Schwab + Percussion Project.
