Grupo Celeste was a tropical Andean music group from Peru, formed in 1974 under the direction of composer VÃctor Casahuamán Bendezú. Their initial breakthrough came with the single "En el campo", which featured more elaborate lyrics than typical cumbia songs of the era. The group prepared new material in 1975, eventually releasing their debut LP, Grupo Celeste, which included hits like "Mi lamento" and "Como un ave". The group's distinctive sound, characterized by wah-wah guitar riffs and rhythmic applause, set them apart. Notable collaborations included working with Lorenzo Palacios, who later became known as Chacalón. In 1983, their hit "Gaviota" gained significant popularity. Grupo Celeste continued to evolve, incorporating technocumbia elements in the 1990s and releasing albums like Dos milenios de Tecnocumbia around 2000. The group also embarked on international tours, performing in Colombia and Mexico in 2008. Throughout their career, Grupo Celeste's music remained highly successful in Peruvian tropical music, with songs like "El aborto" becoming classic cultural touchstones.
