Biography

Gonzalo Rubalcaba is a pianist and an influential exponent of Afro-Cuban jazz. Born in Havana, Cuba, he learned classical piano from the age of eight, graduated in music and spent his youth playing concerts in Havana. His father was the pianist, composer and bandleader Guillermo Rubalcaba. He toured France in 1983 with the Cuban band Orquesta Aragon. In 1985 he formed his own band Grupo Proyecto and was spotted by Dizzy Gillespie. He played at the 1986 Havana Jazz Festival with the American rhythm section of Charlie Haden and Paul Motian. Rubalcaba was soon appearing at international festivals such as Montreal and Montreaux. His early albums for Blue Note included the acclaimed 'Discovery' (1990), 'The Blessing' (1991) and 'Live at Montreaux' both (1991). In 1993 he was allowed to play in America at the Lincoln Center and soon afterwards emigrated to the US, basing himself in South Florida. His most popular albums include 'Inner Voyage' (1999), the Grammy-nominated Supernova (2001), the covers album 'Paseo' (2004) and 'Solo' (2005). He released 'Avatar' in 2008 and 'Tokyo Adagio' with Charlie Haden in 2015 and 'Charlie' in 2016. In 2019 he collaborated with Ron Carter and Jack De Johnette on the album 'Skyline'.
