Gompie was a Dutch band from Nijmegen, formed in 1995. The group gained initial recognition by reworking Smokie's hit "Living Next Door to Alice", adding the phrase "Alice, who the fuck is Alice!?". This version became a significant breakthrough, reaching Number 1 in the Netherlands and Number 17 in the UK. The band's name was derived from Café Gompie in Nijmegen, where the idea for the song originated. Rob Peters, director of a record company, witnessed this interaction and approached singer Peter Koelewijn to record the track.
The band released their debut album Who the X Is Gompie! in 1995, which featured parodies and comical adaptations of well-known songs by artists such as Elvis Presley, Monty Python, Bob Dylan, and The Animals. Notable tracks included "Alice (Who The X Is Alice?)", a cover of Smokie's hit, and "Life? You Never Saw My Wife", based on Monty Python's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life". The album also included other interpretations like "Muss I Denn/House of the Rising Sun" and "Everybody Must Get Stoned". Despite their initial success, Gompie did not release any further albums after 1995.
