Biography
Gito Baloi was a Mozambican singer and bassist born in 1964 in Matola. Born Felix Garcao do Rosario Serafim Bernardo Baloi, he taught himself to play music using instruments made from discarded tins and oil drums. In 1987, he co-founded the trio Tananas, which performed internationally in countries including Australia, France, Japan and Sweden. Baloi's solo recording history included the albums Ekhaya (1995), Na Ku Randza (1997) and Herbs & Roots (2003). He also collaborated with Jason Armstrong on the recordings Desert Voices (1996) and Desert Voices II (2000). During his career, he shared the stage with artists such as Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel. Baloi died in 2004 in Johannesburg. Following his death, the album Beyond was released in 2008. A percentage of the proceeds from the recording supported the Gito Baloi Memorial Trust established for his children.
