Biography

Gerhardus Petrus "Gert" Potgieter was born on November 14, 1929, in Aasvoëlkop, Johannesburg, South Africa. He began taking singing lessons at sixteen and began his singing career in 1949 when he was cast as the tenor role in Vasco da Gama. In 1960, Potgieter sang with Mimi Coertse and George Fourie in Verdi's opera Rigoletto and received the Mimi Coertse Scholarship for singing. He then enrolled at the Vienna Opera School. Upon returning to South Africa in 1962, he worked briefly in the printing industry before fully committing to his singing career from 1966 onwards. Potgieter gained popularity with light music and operatic roles, earning several Sarie Awards for his recordings. He also appeared in films such as Lied in My Hart (Song in my Heart). Potgieter died on July 2, 1977, in a motorcar accident at Tarlton.
