Biography

John Gerrard McAvoy, also known as Gerry McAvoy, born on December 19, 1951, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is a Northern Irish blues rock bass guitarist who began his career in the 1970s. John Gerrard McAvoy first entered the recording scene with the single "Streetalk" in 1979, marking his breakthrough as a professional bassist. In 1980, he released the album Bassics, consolidating his reputation within the Northern Irish rock circuit. Throughout the decade, he collaborated with local acts and toured extensively across the British Isles, building a dedicated following. On 15 May 2014, Gerry McAvoy's Band of Friends performed at the Flowerpot in Derby during a celebration of Rory Gallagher's music, supported by British acoustic blues singer-songwriter Matt Woosey.
