General Norman Johnson, born May 23, 1941 in Norfolk, Virginia, was an R&B singer-songwriter and record producer. He started singing in his church choir at age six. In 1961, General Norman Johnson's group, the Showmen, released "It Will Stand", which became a chart hit. After disbanding in 1968, he joined Invictus Records and formed Chairmen of the Board. Their debut single "Give Me Just a Little More Time" (1970) reached number 3 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart in 1970. General Norman Johnson also wrote successful songs for other artists, including the Grammy Award-winning "Patches" (1970) recorded by Clarence Carter and "Want Ads" (1971) recorded by Honey Cone. In 1976, he released his debut solo album Generally Speaking, followed by General Johnson (1976). General Norman Johnson passed away on October 13, 2010.
