Biography

The Swingin' Medallions were formed in 1962 as The Medallions in Greenwood, South Carolina by John McElrath and Joe Morris. Starting life as a group of friends who enjoyed playing R&B together, they began their career performing at local clubs and fraternity parties. Their breakthrough came with the addition of key members such as Carroll Bledsoe and Gary "Cubby" Culbertson, leading to regular residencies in Panama City and Birmingham. In 1965, they adopted the name Swingin' Medallions to avoid confusion with a Chicago band of the same name. That year, they released their first single "I Wanna Be Your Guy" under Dot Records. The band achieved significant success with their hit single "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)", originally recorded by Dick Holler and the Holidays, which reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. The song was released on Smash Records after a dispute with producer Bill Lowery led them to re-record it with modified lyrics for national distribution. Their debut album Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love) peaked at number 88 on the Billboard 200. The band remained active on the live circuit into the 2020s.
