Biography

Gaye Bykers on Acid were formed in late 1984 in Leicester, England, by Ian Reynolds (Robber Byker) and Ian Hoxley (Mary Byker). The duo, joined by guitarist Tony Horsfall and drummer Kevin Hyde, began performing in 1985, with their first gig at The Princess Charlotte. Their early recordings, including the single "Everythang's Groovy" and the Nosedive Karma EP, were produced in Leeds with Jon Langford and released on the InTape label, establishing their presence in the emerging grebo scene. In 1987 the band signed to Virgin Records and issued the singles "All Hung Up" and "Git Down (Shake Your Thang)". Debut album Drill Your Own Hole reached Number 95 on the UK Albums Chart in November 1987. A subsequent single release, "Hot Thing", followed in 1989, but sales remained modest and the band was dropped by Virgin that year. They continued independently, releasing Cancer Planet Mission on their own Naked Brain label and later Pernicious Nonsense in 1990. After a series of tours and management disputes, Gaye Bykers on Acid disbanded in 1991. Post‑breakup, the group issued compilations such as From the Tomb of the Near Legendary… (1993) and Gaye Bykers on Acid (1992), and a bootleg collection, Everything's Groovy (2001). In 2016 the band announced a final performance at Indie Daze, later expanded into a nine‑date tour, and in 2023 they appeared at festivals including Beautiful Days and Rebellion with new guitarist Will Crewdson.
