Biography
Arnold Dwight "Gatemouth" Moore, born on November 8, 1913, in Topeka, Kansas, was an American blues and gospel singer. Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, he began his career singing ballads and spirituals before joining F.S. Wolcott's Rabbitâs Foot Minstrels around 1930 and performing with artists such as Ida Cox and Ma Rainey. Moore made his first recordings in 1941 for the Gay Paree record label in Kansas City, Missouri. His notable songs included "I Ain't Mad at You Pretty Baby" and "Somebody's Got to Go". Notable artists like B.B. King and Johnny Otis have recorded his compositions and named him as an influence. Moore was ordained as a minister in 1949 and made gospel recordings for Chess and Coral records. His final recording session occurred in 1977, releasing "Beale Street Ain't Beale Street No More" on Johnny Otis' Blues Spectrum label. Moore passed away in Yazoo City, Mississippi, on May 19, 2004.
