Biography
Gaither Wiley Carlton, born February 3, 1901 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, was an American fiddle and banjo player who played with notable musicians such as Al Hopkins, G.B. Grayson, and Clarence Ashley in the 1920s. In 1960, folk music producer Ralph Rinzler "rediscovered" Clarence Ashley at the Union Grove Fiddler's Convention, leading to recording sessions that included Carlton. These sessions marked his entry into the folk music revival of the 1960s, where he accompanied his son-in-law, Doc Watson, and other musicians. Notable recordings from this period include "Rambling Hobo" and "Old Ruben" on banjo, as well as "I'm Going Back to Jericho" and "Handsome Molly" on fiddle. Carlton passed away at his home in Deep Gap, North Carolina, on June 24, 1972.
