Freur, a Welsh electronic music group, was formed in Cardiff in 1982. The band initially consisted of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, who were later joined by Alfie Thomas, John Warwicker, and Bryn Burrows. Freur began their career with a graphic 'squiggle' as their name, but after signing with CBS Records in 1983, they adopted the pronounceable name "Freur" at the label's insistence. Their debut single "Doot-Doot" was released that same year and became their most successful track, peaking at number 59 on the UK Singles Chart and reaching higher positions in countries like New Zealand and Italy.
In 1983, Freur released their first album Doot-Doot, followed by several singles including "Matters of the Heart", "Runaway", and "The Devil and Darkness". Their second album, Get Us Out Of Here, was released in 1986 but only saw distribution in Germany and the Netherlands. The band also composed the soundtrack for the movie Underworld (also known as Transmutations), written by Clive Barker. Despite officially disbanding in 1986, former Freur members Hyde, Smith, Thomas, and Burrows formed Underworld with bassist Baz Allen in 1987, initially finding success with the single "Underneath the Radar" (1988) before disbanding in 1990.
