Biography
Frederick Anthony Picariello Jr., known professionally as Freddy Cannon, was born on 4 December 1936 in Revere, Massachusetts. He grew up in Lynn, Massachusetts, and developed an early interest in rhythm and blues music, learning to play the guitar. He made his recording debut after graduating from high school in 1958 with "Cha-Cha-Do" by the Spindrifts, which became a local hit. His breakthrough came with "Tallahassee Lassie", released under the stage name Freddy Cannon. The song peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959 and sold over one million copies, earning a gold disc from the RIAA. His career flourished with hits like "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" and "Palisades Park", both of which reached high positions on the charts. His album The Explosive! Freddy Cannon topped the UK Albums Chart in March 1960. He continued to release successful singles, including "Twistin' All Night Long" with Danny & the Juniors and "Abigail Beecher". His popularity waned in the US, but he remained a popular touring act internationally. Notable collaborations included appearances on American Bandstand and roles in films like Just for Fun. His last significant hits were "Action", released in 1965, which earned him another gold disc. After leaving Warner Bros. Records in 1967, Cannon continued to release singles and albums, maintaining a presence in the music industry through various compilations and reissues. In 2002, he released a festive album titled Have A Boom Boom Christmas!
