Biography
Frankie Gaye was an American soul and R&B singer who was born as Frances Timothy Gay in 1941 in Washington, D.C.. He began a musical career singing in church and with local doo-wop groups before serving as a radio disc jockey during the Vietnam War. His recollections of the conflict served as the inspiration for the song âWhatâs Happening, Brotherâ (1971) by his brother, Marvin Gaye. In 1977, he provided background vocals for the hit single âGot to Give It Up, Pt. 1â and later co-composed music for the film Penitentiary (1979). Gaye signed with Motorcity Records in 1989, releasing the singles âExtraordinary Girlâ (1989) and âMy Brotherâ (1990). His discography includes the studio album My Brother (1990) and the compilation The Very Best of Frankie Gaye (1996). He died in 2001.
