Fortran 5, an English electronic music duo from North London, formed around 1990 by David Baker and Simon Leonard. They initially gained recognition as I Start Counting, signing with Mute Records in 1984 after meeting at Middlesex University. Their first two singles, "Letters to a Friend" (1984) and "Still Smiling" (1985), were produced by Daniel Miller. They released their debut album My Translucent Hands (1986). Fortran 5 emerged as a new project around 1990 when Baker and Leonard realized their new material differed from their previous electropop style. They collaborated with artists like Kris Weston of the Orb and Rod Slater from Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, releasing the albums Blues (1991), Bad Head Park (1993), and Avocado Suite (1995). They also remixed songs for artists such as Inspiral Carpets and Erasure. In the mid-1990s, they changed their name to Komputer.
