Biography

Forro in the Dark is an American collective formed in 2002 in New York City. The group was established by Mauro Refosco and included Guilherme Monteiro, Jorge Continentino, and Davi Vieira. The ensemble performed forró music combined with elements of rock, jazz, and country. After establishing a weekly residency at the Nublu nightclub, the group released its debut studio recording, Bonfires of São João, in November 2006. The album featured collaborations with David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto, and Miho Hatori. The ensemble toured North America and Europe in 2007. During this period, the group recorded the track “City of Immigrants” for the Steve Earle album Washington Square Serenade. Its discography included the EP Dia de Roda (2008) and the studio recordings Light a Candle (2009) and Sandcastles (2017). In 2015, the ensemble collaborated with John Zorn on the recording Forro in the Dark Plays Zorn.
