Biography

Evelyn "Champagne" King (born July 1, 1960, in The Bronx, New York) is a celebrated American singer, songwriter, and producer known for iconic disco hits. Raised in Philadelphia, King was discovered as a teenager singing while cleaning offices at Philadelphia International Records. Producer Theodore T. Life signed her, and she debuted with Smooth Talk (1977), featuring her signature hit Shame, which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. King achieved further success in the 1980s with I'm in Love (1981) and Love Come Down (1982), both topping the R&B and dance charts. Her career thrived with consistent charting singles throughout the decade. In 2004, Shame was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame. After overcoming health challenges, King returned with Open Book (2007) and later joined the supergroup First Ladies of Disco in 2015, leaving her mark as a disco and soul legend.
