Engine Down were an American rock ensemble from Richmond, Virginia, active between 1996 and 2005. The group was established by bassist Jason Wood, guitarist Jonathan Fuller, drummer Cornbread Compton, and guitarist Jeremy Taylor. They achieved professional recognition as part of the Washington, D.C. area post-hardcore movement alongside ensembles including The Dismemberment Plan and Faraquet. After Taylor departed in 1998, Keeley Davis joined the ensemble on guitar and vocals. Their recording career began with the tracks âTwelve Hour Turn/Engine Downâ (1998) and â2 Songâ (1998), followed by the debut studio recording Under the Pretense of Present Tense (1999). Their discography includes the studio recordings To Bury Within the Sound (2000) and Demure (2002), the latter of which received a 7.5 rating from Pitchfork. They released the extended play Sign of Breath (2001) and the studio recording Engine Down (2004), which received a 7.7 rating from Pitchfork. The ensemble became inactive in 2005 following a farewell tour.
