Biography

Emily Smith, born May 25, 1981, in Thornhill, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, is a Scottish folk singer and songwriter. She began playing piano at age seven, later switching to the piano accordion and becoming the National Mod champion at eighteen. Smith earned an Honours degree in Scottish Music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Her career started with the debut album A Day Like Today (2002). She released several albums including Too Long Away (2008) and Traiveller's Joy (2011). Her collaborative work includes Adoon Winding Nith with Jamie McClennan (2009). Smith won the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician award in 2002 and was named Scots Singer of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2008.
